With the establishment of Syracuse Equine Veterinary Specialists in March 2011, Dr Al Romero and Dr Jean-Yin Tan introduced an unparalleled level of equine veterinary care.  As specialists in large animal internal medicine and surgery, we are drawing from over 10 years of experience at premier referral institutions throughout the country.


Alfredo Romero, DVM, Dipl. ACVS

As a board-certified equine surgeon, Dr Romero has advanced training in lameness, imaging, wound management, soft tissue surgery, and orthopedics.  With a family background in Thoroughbred breeding, Dr Romero pursued a career with horses, graduating in 2005 from Cornell University with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and following this with a fast-paced surgical internship at world-renowned Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Kentucky.  After completing an intensive surgical residency at UC Davis in California, Dr Romero accepted an associate surgeon position at a leading referral hospital in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center in New Jersey.  He was fortunate to be able to introduce laser therapy and play a key role in establishing a new MRI unit at the practice before leaving to join Dr Tan in establishing SEVS in Manlius NY in 2011.  Dr Romero has spoken at numerous regional and national veterinary conferences including the Western New York Equine Practitioner's Group 2014, Hambletonian Continuing Education Seminar in 2012 and 2013, American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Conference in 2006, and the Kentucky Blue Grass Symposium in 2005.  He is active in the field of regenerative medicine and engages in seminars and wetlabs where he trains veterinarians on the harvesting of stem cells.  He has publications in Veterinary Surgery and the Canadian Veterinary Journal and has obtained certificates for the study of basic and advanced equine fracture management and equine rescue.


Jean-Yin Tan, DVM, Dipl. ACVIM

Dr Tan is board-certified in internal medicine and has advanced training in geriatric medicine, endocrinology, ultrasound, neurology, neonatal medicine, and respiratory, renal, hepatic, and gastrointestinal disease.  She is also trained in equineveterinary acupuncture.  Dr Tan grew up immersed in the hunter/jumper world in Alberta, Canada and completed her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at Cornell University in 2005, where she had the opportunity to participate in research on Recurrent Airway Obstruction (heaves) at the renowned Baker Institute of Animal Health.  Following a 1-year internship atMid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center, Dr Tan completed her large animal internal medicine residency at the University of Minnesota in 2008, where she had the opportunity to lecture on large animal renal disease and neonatology and worked closely with camelids and all large animal species.  She has since incorporated her expertise in internal medicine with general practice as an equine ambulatory practitioner at UC Davis in California and subsequently in New Jersey, where she also began consultancy work for Veterinary Answers.  Dr Tan has published in the American Journal of Veterinary Research and the Canadian Veterinary Journal and is a free-lance writer for The Horse.  She has also spoken at numerous veterinary conferences, including the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Forum in 2008, and is certified in equine rescue.
